Rorke's Drift Hospital was the center of the famous and intense Battle of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War on 22–23 January 1879. During the battle, a small British force of around 139 men (many of whom were sick patients) defended a makeshift Swedish mission station, converted into a field hospital and supply depot, against an attack by over 3,000 Zulu warriors. The fighting in and around the hospital building itself was extremely brutal, and the building was eventually set on fire, forcing the defenders to break through the inner walls to rescue the patients.
